Apprenticeships

Starting Your Career with an Apprenticeship

Working in Early Years education is one of the most rewarding career paths you can take. Every day, you have the opportunity to make a real difference in a child’s life during their most important years of development. But for many people, the question is: how do I get started?

One of the best routes into the sector is through an Apprenticeship.

    What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a structured programme that allows you to earn while you learn. You’ll be employed in a nursery, preschool, or school setting while completing a nationally recognised qualification. This means you’ll gain hands-on experience, learn from experienced professionals, and study towards your diploma – all while being paid.

In the UK, the main Early Years apprenticeships include:

    • Level 2 Early Years Practitioner – an entry-level role that introduces you to working with children under 5.

    • Level 3 Early Years Educator – a more advanced qualification, preparing you to take on greater responsibility and move into senior practitioner roles

    • Level 5 Early Years Lead Practitioner -  a higher-level programme that trains experienced practitioners to take on leadership roles, focusing on coaching staff, driving quality improvement, and leading best practice in early years settings.

    • There are also pathways into related roles, such as L3 Teaching Assistant, L3 Business Administration  or L5 Operations managers.

    Who Can Apply?

Apprenticeships are open to people of all ages, whether you’re a school or college leaver, changing careers, or returning to work. They’re particularly attractive to those looking for their first role in education or for people who prefer a practical, hands-on approach to learning rather than going straight to university.

    Applicants will need:

    • A good standard of English and Maths

    • A demonstrable enthusiasm for working with children

    • Reliability, communication skills, and a willingness to learn

Previous experience working with children isn’t essential, but any volunteering or related roles (e.g. babysitting, youth work, or sports coaching) can really strengthen your application.

    Why Choose an Apprenticeship?

There are many benefits to starting your career this way:

    • Earn a salary while you train

    • Gain a nationally recognised qualification

    • Receive on-the-job training from experienced practitioners

    • Access clear career progression routes in childcare and education

    • Develop practical skills that employers are actively looking for

    What Happens After?

Once you’ve completed your apprenticeship, you’ll be qualified to work as an Early Years Practitioner or Educator, with options to continue developing through higher qualifications such as Level 3 / 4/5 in Early Years Advanced Practice or even a degree in education. Many apprentices go on to become Room Leaders, Deputy Managers, or Nursery Managers within a few years of completing their training.

    Final Thoughts

An Early Years Apprenticeship is more than just a job – it’s the start of a career where every day brings the chance to inspire, guide, and support the youngest learners. If you’re passionate about making a difference and ready to learn, this could be the perfect pathway for you.
